My Reflections on Generation Connect

Generation Connect began with a simple idea.

One afternoon, Jeremy Rossbach, my Chief Marketing Officer, shared his vision of bringing a group of Serve the Future students together to make sandwiches and hand them out to people experiencing homelessness. I'll admit—I was hesitant. I had never organized anything like that before, and I had a lot of questions. Would students volunteer their time? Would they understand the purpose? In a world where so much feels transactional, would they choose to serve simply because it was the right thing to do?

A few months later, that simple idea took on a life of its own.

While meeting with Josh Garcia at Miracle Mile Delicatessen to discuss our summer programming, we mentioned Generation Connect. Without hesitation, Josh said he wanted Miracle Mile to be part of it. Soon after, Shamrock Foods donated the food, and the City of Phoenix helped us identify the South Mountain Senior Center as the perfect place to bring generations together. What started as a small act of service became a true community collaboration.

If I'm honest, my biggest concern was still our students. Would they show up? Would they engage? Would they see the value in giving back? I couldn't have been more wrong.

The morning of the event, students arrived early, carpooled together, and came ready to serve. FOX 10 News joined us as they packed more than 100 lunches, but what stood out wasn't the cameras—it was the genuine enthusiasm of our students. They weren't there because someone asked them to be. They were there because they wanted to make a difference.

When we arrived at the South Mountain Senior Center, something special happened. Our students immediately introduced themselves, sat down with the seniors, shared conversations, laughed together, and even played Red Ball tennis. Watching those relationships form so naturally reminded me why Serve the Future exists.

I left that day with an overwhelming sense of pride—not just in what Generation Connect accomplished, but in who our students are becoming. They demonstrated compassion, confidence, leadership, and a willingness to serve others with open hearts. They embodied our mission of helping others feel Seen, Encouraged, Respected, Valued, and Empowered.

Generation Connect reminded us that belonging has no age limit.

This event would not have been possible without the incredible support of the City of Phoenix, Miracle Mile Delicatessen, Shamrock Foods, the South Mountain Senior Center, our volunteers, coaches, and everyone who believed in this vision. Together, we created something much bigger than a single day of service—we created meaningful connections that strengthened our community.

This is only the beginning. We look forward to continuing to grow Generation Connect alongside the City of Phoenix and our community partners, creating even more opportunities for young people and older adults to learn from one another, build lasting relationships, and strengthen our community through connection.

My heart is full, and I can't wait to see where this journey takes us next.

Watch how the day unfolded here.
